Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology. It combines engineering design and problem solving skills with medical and biological sciences to improve healthcare diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy by way of technology. Biomedical engineering has only recently emerged as its own discipline, compared to many other more established engineering fields. The department offers innovative educational programs that integrate biological sciences and engineering, and apply engineering tools, methods, and practices to solve problems and make advances in biology and medicine.
General Information
The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers a curriculum leading to a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering. The curriculum includes engineering fundamentals and advanced courses in engineering, and the life sciences. All students participate in a biomedical engineering design practicum during their senior year.
The biomedical engineering program is ideal for those students wishing to enter industry upon completion. However, the curriculum has some flexibility and lends itself well to those students wishing to work in health professions.
A variety of internships and cooperative education opportunities are available. Biomedical engineering students are encouraged to participate in these programs upon the completion of their freshman year.
