Resources and Laboratories

Introduction

In light of serving the undergraduate and postgraduate courses, Electrical Engineering (EE) department host various laboratories in electronics, communications, electrical power as well as computer engineering in order to provide students with the hands-on-skills that are necessary in their engineering career. The labs are equipped with state-of-the-art, standalone and computer-based facilities such as development boards, modules, devices and instruments. Students will get extensive experience through performing experiments in work group, collecting and analyzing data, discussion, sharing information with each others and submitting reports. All the required information and details about the experiments and their steps, and how to use the collected data to reach conclusion are provided in the student’s lab-manual for each course in electrical engineering curriculum. Moreover, EE students receive support during preparation and performing the experiments from their professors, teaching assistants and technicians. 1. Basic Electrical Engineering Lab

Place: A2.6
Capacity: 24 Students

Topics and courses: The laboratory covers the basic courses for the first two years in electrical engineering. The courses served by this lab are the electrical circuits, electronics, logic design, and electrical measurements.

2. Communications and Advanced electronics Lab

3. Optical-fiber communications Lab

4. Electromagnetic waves Lab

Place: B2.3
Capacity: 16 students (will be increased to 24)
Equipment: The lab equipped with various tools and instruments, such as
  • Antenna Lab Kits (two vendors: Feedback and LN. Standalone and computer based kits cover different types of antennas: Dipole, Yagi-array, Horn, Log-Periodic, Dish, Microstrip (single& array), Helical, Dielectric,…)
  • Microwave trainer Kit (two vendors: Feedback and LN. Standalone and computer based benchtop systems designed to familiarize students with the basic waveguide components of microwave systems).
  • Transmission Line Demonstrator.
  • Vector Network analyzer (wide dynamic range, 10 MHz to 20 GHz, high output power).
  • Radio frequency synthesizers (fully-programmable, wide frequency range, high resolution and spectral purity, and offers different types of modulations).
Topics and courses: The laboratory covers the basic and advanced courses in field theory and propagations such as Electromagnetic waves 1, Electromagnetic waves 2, Microwave Engineering, and Antenna and propagation.

Research: The laboratory can serve the research in the area of transmission lines, on-chip and PCB interconnects, signal integrity through using the provided equipment.

5. Control and PLC Lab

Place: B2.3
Capacity: 16 students (will be increased to 24)
Equipment: The lab equipped with various tools and instruments for the control systems and Programmable logic controllers (PLC), such as
  • Control and Instrumentation Principles Kits (servo mechanism: DC motor, a variety of sensors and both analogue and digital controllers).
  • Complete transducers kits (wide range of transducers and a number of standard signal processing methods).
  • ABB Robot (compact 6-axis machine mounted on workbench).
  • Programmable logic controller (Siemens ET200S)
  • Wind turbine system.
  • Electro-mechanical system using DC motor.
  • Electro-mechanical system using stepper motor.
  • Bottling process system.

6. Electrical machines Lab

Place: B3.1
Capacity: 16 students
Equipment: The lab is made up of 3 laboratories: DC Machines Lab., Three Phase AC Machines Lab., and Three Phase AC Basic Circuits and Transformers. The lab capability will be extended as a new lab extension for the DC Machines Lab and the three phases AC Machines Lab; which have the same performance of the first Lab. with different more compact technology. The lab equipped with various machines, tools and instruments for the Electrical machines supplied from two companies: ELWE and Feedback. Next phase of the lab will be including instruments for the power electronics.

8. Power System Simulator and Smart Grid Lab

Capacity: 16 students
Equipment: The lab equipped with various tools and instruments to implement power plant, transmission line and cables as well as receiving substation and distribution. The lab is computer-based interactive modules with SCADA viewer software.
